该装置围绕所谓的微共振腔（miroresonator）打造，宽度为 3 毫米（0.1 英寸），厚度仅 2 微米。

装置采用了镁制材料，具有螺旋的形状。当暴露于交变电磁场时，会产生微小的电流。反之，电流产生的热量可以熔化含有某些药物的胶囊。

这意味着设计者能够为其植入可按需释放的药物，比如当时用止痛药时，就可以从身体外部施加一个电磁场来激活该装置，从而实现药物的释放。

如以此来，医生可以精确控制用药的剂量，并在其到达指定位置时才启用。一旦完成使命，装置本体也是可溶性的，无需再次通过手术去除。

团队表示，经过调整，该装置和响应特定的波长，以便在不同时间点熔化不同的胶囊，按顺序释放出所需的药物。而且这个过程非常快，仅需 1 一秒钟即可作出响应。

通过将镁先沉积在基板上，然后通过离子喷淋的方式，将材料形成所需的结构，研究人员得以将成品装置的厚度控制在仅仅 2 微米。

作为一种侵入性和痛感都更小的解决方案，它显然是手术后强烈需要镇痛药物的患者的一个福音，比如向假体矫形术后的患者脊柱附近按需释放吗啡来镇痛。
